Mount Fitz Roy – The Beautiful Argentine Patagonia

absolutely BREATHTAKING!
one of the most BEAUTIFUL places to hike!

Mount Fitz Roy is a mountain in Patagonia, on the border between Argentina and Chile. It is located in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, near El Chaltén village and Viedma lake.

You might not have heard about Mount Fitz Roy but you have definitely heard about the American clothing brand, Patagonia. The Patagonia logo is a stylistic version of the Mount Fitz Roy.

The Fitz Roy hike is like no others. The hike takes the whole day from morning til evening, about 11-12 hours including break time, photos and picnic at De los Tres Lagoon, the highest point of the Fitz Roy trek. The day hike is a long and strenuous hike with an amazing view along the way and at the end, making it the most beautiful hike in Patagonia.

At the highest elevation of the Fitz Roy hike, De los Tres Lagoon, with the altitude of approximately 1200M.

El Chaltén – The Capital of Trekking

Most of the trailheads start in the town of El Chaltén, you can say it’s a hiker’s mecca right in the Fitz Roy range. One of the delights of hiking here is that without taking any transport, you can spend each day exploring all the different viewpoints, lagoons and mountains and return each evening to a comfortable hotel in this welcoming, lively mountain village. You can then take a hot shower, get changed and immediately head out for your well-deserving dinner at the restaurants nearby.

Welcome to the Capital of Trekking!

How to Get to El Chaltén?

The very first step to begin your adventure in the Argentine Patagonia is to fly to El Calafate (FTE). There are flights operating daily from most of Argentina’s major hubs, including Ushuaia and Buenos Aires.

Once you land into El Calafate airport, you should see shuttle buses & minivans waiting for the flights arrival to transport passengers to either El Calafate city centre or El Chaltén. You may buy the ticket directly from them and that’s the cheapest way to go to El Chaltén.

The journey from El Calafate airport to El Chaltén is about 215 km, it takes around 3 hours. One way bus ticket should cost you around ARS 1900 (USD 22). There are three bus companies: Caltur, with 3 departures a day, El Chaltén, with up to 5 departures a day, and TAQSA, which leaves at least twice a day. The earliest bus leaves at 0800 and the latest at 1800. These buses often sell out during the high season (December – February), so book your tickets in advance. The buses are generally clean, comfortable and have bathroom facilities onboard.

The scenic journey from El Calafate to El Chaltén!

You can also choose private transfer or hire a car, giving you more flexibility to stop for pictures or bathroom break along the way. The 3 hours journey is very scenic as you will be passing Lake Argentino as well as Lake & Glacier Viedma, at the same time you’ll be immersing yourself in the views of Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. This is going to get you so excited even before you arrive at El Chaltén, surrounded by the beautiful landscapes.

The sunkissed Mount Fitz Roy!

Where to Stay at El Chaltén?

Once you get to the centre of El Chaltén, on both sides of the main road, San Martin, you will see plenty of accommodation choices, there’s something for everyone.

During peak season (December – February), you better make your booking in advance to avoid disappointment . Also, if you already have your booking, you’ll be able to tell the bus company when you buy your shuttle bus ticket at El Calafate airport and they will drop you directly at your hotel.

I visited El Chaltén in 2016, we were staying at Patagonia Travellers’ Hostel, the price is reasonable and it’s very well located, in the heart of the village.  Restaurants, grocery stores, cafes, and souvenir shops are within walking distance. The rooms are very clean, the staff speak good English and they are very helpful in providing information regarding the hikes. There’s also a shared kitchen for the guest to use. Overall, we had a wonderful experience there.

We cooked our dinner before waking up the next day for our Mount Fitz Roy hike!

The Hikes around Mount Fitz Roy

 “Laguna de los Tres Trail”

Total Distance: 26 km
Duration: 11 hours
Highest Elevation: 1200M
Difficulty: 5/5
View: 5/5

This trail is the most popular one to do in El Chaltén, it provides arguably the best viewpoint in the national park. Los Tres (the Three) refers to the peaks of Mount Fitz Roy, Poincenot and Torre, all of which can be seen in the magnificent 360 degree views from the shores of the lake. It is a strenuous hike, at the same time it is extremely rewarding. Throughout this entire 26 km trail, you’ll get to see the flora and fauna of this Argentine Patagonia. This is absolutely one of the most scenic hikes I have ever done, the snow capped mountains are seen throughout the whole trail and that makes the hike very enjoyable, it feels like you are embraced completely by the beautiful nature.

Get a trekking map from your hotel and you are good to go! You will find signs along the way so you don’t have to worry about getting lost. You are going to have a lot of fun and enjoy every moment throughout the hike.

Mountain village of El Chaltén!

On the San Martin main road, walk to the end and you’ll find the trailhead to Fitz Roy and that’s where you begin your hike.

The starting point!

As you can see from this sign at the entrance of the trail, it’s very straight forward and the viewpoints are shown. You are heading to Laguna de los Tres where you’re going to get a close and magnificent shot of the snow capped Mount Fitz Roy.

The signboard of the trail at the entrance!
The magnificent Mount Fitz Roy!

The first viewpoint is “Río de las Vueltas”, the Vueltas River, is a river course located in the Lago Argentino department.  It descends towards the Viedma lake, making numerous curves through lenga forests and vertical walls. It is one of the most important rivers in the area and transports water from the melting of glaciers in the region.

First viewpoint, “Río de las Vueltas”!
I am totally in love with the surrounding!

Keep following the trail and you will come to the second viewpoint, “Mirador del Fitz Roy”, the lookout point of Fitz Roy. This is where you’ll get an unobstructed & gorgeous view of Mount Fitz Roy.

A perfect view of Mount Fitz Roy at the second viewpoint!
Halfway checkpoint before arriving at Laguna de los Tres!

After this lookout point, you’ll be more relaxed as the following 3-4 km will be mostly flat before you get to the Poincenot campsite. Enjoy breathing in the fresh air and immerse yourself in the nature. You’ll see streams with clean cold glacier water, according to the local, it is absolutely safe to drink. I trusted them and took a mouthful of water, it’s so refreshing! I didn’t have any stomach discomfort after, ha!

You’ll then come across a junction, where you can go to Laguna Torre taking your left, that’s another beautiful lagoon you’ll have to check it out. But for this trail you are taking the right, continue on to Laguna de los Tres.

Turn left to Laguna Torre, turn right to Laguna de los Tres!

The final part of this trail is the hardest, be prepared as it gets steeper and rocky, and the temperature drops significantly. Take your time to slowly and carefully ascend and you will soon arrive at the lagoon.

Laguna de los Tres!
Standing on the frozen Laguna de los Tres!

Enjoy the Mount Fitz Roy up close, your best reward after the tough hike. Now you can enjoy your lunch break, and take all your time for capturing the beauty of the surrounding. Even though the best season to visit the Argentine Patagonia is during the summer months, however, on colder months, the lagoon gets completely frozen and you can walk on it, it’s another different experience.

Lucky for us, we spotted a few wild foxes up there around the lagoon, they were so shy and adorable. That has made our whole hike even more memorable.

Take the same path for returning to El Chaltén.

 “Laguna Torre Trail”

Total Distance: 20 km
Duration: 9 hours
Highest Elevation: 560M
Difficulty: 3/5
View: 5/5

Beside Laguna de los Tres, this is another great classic trail you don’t want to miss. It is a valley trek that will take you to an overwhelming site of mountains and glaciers. The trail enters the valley of the Fitz Roy river and follows up alongside the stream to its source.

This trail difficulty level is moderate and it’s suitable for everyone. It offers a total different scenery than the Laguna de los Tres trail. You are going to see valley that is so stunning, glaciers, waterfalls, different kind of trees and flowers, also special species of birds can be spotted.

The steep and beautiful valley!
Waterfall and the turquoise river!

Most of the ascending of this trail is at the beginning, the second half of the trail is mostly flat with some up and down sections.

Laguna Torre Trail is well-marked all the way, there’s no confusion point at all. You just need to get a trekking map and you can enjoy the trek at your own pace.

Woodpecker

When you finally get to Laguna Torre, you will be blown away by what you see. Cerro Torre, an iconic mountain towering behind and a glacier that spills into Laguna Torre, ice bergs can be seen floating on it. It is just so captivating! I have never seen anything like this.

It’s UNBELIEVABLE!!!

From Laguna Torre, you can hike to Mirador Maestri, a lookout point of the glacier. The ascent is about 300 meters, estimate about an hour time to reach. We regretted that we didn’t make it there, especially after seeing pictures of others. The view up there is amazing, you’ll get a great view of the glacier. Well, that gives me a reason to go back, and at the same time exploring more trails.

Laguna Torre

“Laguna de los Tres + Laguna Torre Circuit Trail”

If you are looking for something more adventurous, you can combine both of the classic trails into this circuit trail, with the total distance of 35 km. In order for you to have sufficient time to truly enjoy the nature and taking photographs, you may consider this camping itinerary:

Day 1: Begin your hike to Laguna de los Tres and spend a night at the Poincenot campsite. You can leave your bags and equipments at the campsite before going to the lagoon.

Day 2: From Poicenot campsite, head to El Chaltén direction and shortly you’ll arrive at the junction where there’s a sign showing you the direction to Laguna Torre. You’ll continue to hike about 7 km to reach there.  From Laguna Torre, you will hike directly back to El Chaltén.

Of course, there are more trails you can do in and around El Chaltén if you have more time.

Lion Rock 獅子山 – the Hong Kong Spirit

The lion’s overlooking the vibrant city of Hong Kong!

Lion Rock 獅子山 is the mountain representing Hong Kong, the people and Hong Kong’s spirit, which is “Perseverance & Solidarity”. It is a very popular hiking trail among the locals and tourists because up there you could have the whole Kowloon and Victoria Harbour view, it is stunning! Another reason of its popularity is the trail is easy, you don’t need to be physically fit to do this hike, you can take your time to go up and you’ll reach the top in less than 2 hours and the view is all yours.

Many also love going up to Lion Rock for sunset, especially couples and photographers. No doubt, it is very romantic sitting on the rock watching the sun sets behind the horizon. On a clear sunny day, the scenery is unbeatable, the sun looks like a big orange egg yolk, contrasting to the blue sky. In these short moments during sunset, you see the transforming of colors in front of your eyes. Nothing feels better than that!
What are you waiting for?

3. When you reach Fat Jong Temple, turn left right after it and you will be on the trail going up.

4. There are a few ways going up, check on your Hiking Trail HK App to find your way up via Heaven Stairs 天梯, if not the other ways can still bring you to the top, you won’t get lost.

Heaven Stairs 天梯

5. From the Lion Rock Head 獅子山| 獅頭, after enjoying the view, follow the path to descend to Kowloon Pass 九龍坳, you are there when you see the Handover/ Reunification Pavilion, check your Hiking Trail HK App and find the Handover/ Reunification Trail to descend to Lion Rock Park, via Pat Sin Temple 八仙廟.

6. You’ll finish your hike at Lion Rock Park, follow the Lion Rock Road to the main road, Chuk Yuen Road 竹園道. Cross the road to the opposite site, you will see the bus stop, next to Laco International. You may take the green mini bus #73 or #72 to Festival Walk Shopping Mall, which is connected to the MTR Kowloon Tong 九龍塘 station.

Hike Overview:

The Wong Tai Sin temple is one of the tourist attractions in Hong Kong. Many people go there for praying and wish for something, it can be for family, love, health or career. Believe it or not, the prayers are often answered! If you haven’t visited the temple before, I’d recommend you to go pay a visit before you start your hike to Lion Rock. Go feel the atmosphere and it is a good way to experience the local culture and beliefs.

Wong Tai Sin Temple 黃大仙廟

From Wong Tai Sin Temple, the first 2 kms is walking on the steep Shatin Pass Road until you reach Fat Jong Temple. After turning left into the trail going up, you have around 1.5 kms of ascending on rocks. It’s not difficult, take your time to slowly and carefully going up, you’ll get to Lion Rock Tail where you will see the Lion Rock sign.

Ascending on rocks!
Don’t forget to enjoy the beautiful city view behind you.

– Maxime Lagacé

Feeling the Hong Kong’s spirit!!!

The Heaven Stairs 天梯 is a picture spot, you might miss it by taking the other ways, so trace yourself in Hiking Trail HK App.

Once you get to the top, you’ll enjoy the unobstructed view of the city of Hong Kong.

You will soon realize after crossing from Lion Rock Tail to Lion Rock Head, there’s a big sign warning hikers about the danger of steep cliffs. The sign is referring to the path going up from Heaven Stairs. There’s always risk when you hike but to go up is definitely safer than going down, hiking on the rocks. This is the reason I planned my trail to go up this way, you’ll get to enjoy some fun climbing up on rocks, and to descend in a very easy and safe way.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has done a marvelous job in making Hong Kong one of the best places in the world for hiking. We are all privileged by that, getting to enjoy the beautiful nature and landscape of this vibrant city, for free. AFCD set up signs to remind hikers of the possible danger parts for us to be alert while enjoying our hike.

Once you get to the Lion Rock Head, find your spot and sit down comfortably, enjoy the view and wait for the magical sunset moments.

How can someone look at the sunset and not dreaming! If you like sunset as much as I do, I’d recommend you another trail which offer a magnificent sunset view. Please check out my Suicide Cliff Hike!

Devil’s Fist 鬼手岩 – the Challenging Trail Around Plover Cove Reservoir

The Devil’s Fist! Does it look like the fist of Thanos in Avengers?

Devil’s Fist 鬼手岩 is Hong Kong’s oldest rock with 400 million years old. As you can already tell from the name, Devil’s Fist looks like a hand rising from the waves. Weathering and erosion occurred along the sandstone bedding forms the shape of the “fingers”.  And its bottom after being eroded by sea waves forms the shape of a narrow “wrist”, which will only be exposed above the water level at low tide.

It’s not easy to go there if you choose hiking as your option because of the long distance and it is a trail you might possibly get lost. Having said that, it’s definitely a hike you have to go experience despite the challenges. Not only you’ll test your physical strength, you’ll also be testing your endurance. It’s good to know where your fitness level at. I’m very glad that I did this trail, and I completed it twice. The feeling of achievement is great.

Getting mentally prepared is one important factor before going for this challenging hike. I’d strongly advice that you start as early as possible as this trail is going to take at least 10-12 hours, you’ll hike from day to night, it takes even longer if you lose your way or take longer breaks.

Read on this blog and you will have a better picture of this long challenging trail.

Distance: 33 KM
Duration: 11 hours
Elevation Gain: 1771 M
Difficulty: 5/5
(this trail is extremely physically demanding, it requires strong endurance!)

You’ll only get to see the whole Devil’s Fist during low tide!

How to get there & return:

1. Take MTR East Rail Line to Tai Po Market 大埔墟 station, then take exit A3 to go to the minibus terminal.

2. Take the green minibus #20R to Wu Kau Tang 烏蛟騰, the final stop. The journey is about 30 minutes from Tai Po Market.

3. Your long hike to Devil’s Fist will begin at Wu Kau Tang Village, where you get off the minibus.

4. You’ll finish your hike at Tai Mei Tuk 大美督 barbecue area, where you will see the bus stop, you can take either the green minibus #20C or the KMB bus #75K back to the East Rail Line Tai Po Market 大埔墟 station, for returning to the city.

Hike Overview:

Before doing this long trail, it’s recommended that you have some trainings on other hiking trails to better prepare your fitness level. Pre-hike stretching and warming up is a must to prevent cramps, trust me, two of my team mates got it towards the end of the hike.

You’ll first head to Kau Tam Tso 九担租. The first 3 km of the trail is flat, make use of it to walk faster to earn some time. Devil’s Fist is 14 kms away from the starting point, Wu Kau Tang 烏蛟騰, it takes about 4 hours. From Devil’s Fist to the finishing point, Tai Mei Tuk 大美督, the distance is about 19 kms, hiking time is around 6-7 hours. It is important that you keep track of your time and knowing how much distance left to complete the trail so you’ll have an idea by what time you’ll reach the finishing point. Remember to bring headlamp with you, it is very likely you’ll be hiking in the dark towards the end of the trail. Especially during Fall and Winter time when the day time is short, the sun sets at 5 something.

From Kau Tam Tso, you’ll walk towards Ha Miu Tin 下苗田, then you’ll have to turn right into Tai Tung 大峒 where you’ll start ascending. After Tai Tung, you’ll hike through 3 mountains, Mount Newland 觀音峒, Luk Wu Tung 鹿湖峒 & Dit Sei Kau 跌死狗

To do this trail, one of the challenges is definitely hiking through countless of mountains where you’ll ascend and descend many times, wear a knee support if you have one so you do not injure your knee easily. Another thing you have to know about this trail is there will be no exit points throughout the hike. Once you start the hike going to Devil’s Fist, you have to complete the whole 33 kms trail. You do have the choice to either finish your hike at Tai Mei Tuk with the total distance of 33 kms; OR, you can hike all the way back to Wu Kau Tang, where you start the trail, with the total distance of 28 kms, slightly less in distance.

I personally like to see different view when I hike, and walking on the Plover Cove Reservoir Dam is definitely the best way to finish your hike where you could enjoy the sea breeze, watching people cycling and skating along the dam. You’ll walk on flat concrete road with the sea on your left, and the reservoir on your right. It is very relaxing! Also, there are more bus frequency at Tai Mei Tuk going to Tai Po Market station comparing to Wu Kau Tang, especially when you arrive late, you might have to wait for a long time, or you’ll probably miss the last bus.

Plover Cove Reservoir 船灣淡水湖
Yan Chau Tong Marine Park 印洲塘海岸公園

From Luk Wu Tung, you’ll have a bird’s eye view of the Plover Cove Reservoir 船灣淡水湖 on one side; and on the other side, there lies the captivating Double Haven or Yan Chau Tong Marine Park 印洲塘海岸公園. Spend a few moments there, take a break, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Feel the great energy from the nature and breathe in some fresh air.

Dit Sei Kau 跌死狗

You’ll then arrive at Dit Sei Kau 跌死狗, where you’ll see big rock formations. It’s a great spot for pictures. Next, you’ll be heading to Fung Wong Tau 鳳凰頭, leaving you 6 more mountains to go, with 6 kms in distance before you get to Devil’s Fist 鬼手岩.

Keep checking for ribbons to ensure you stay on the right track!

“ I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees. ”

– Henry David Thoreau

The path with thick bushes and branches sticking out, watch out!

From Fung Wong Tau, all the way to Tai Leng 大嶺, the last mountain before you descend to Devil’s Fist, the path will become narrower and less obvious. To avoid getting lost in the jungle, it is very important that you keep tracing your trail on your hiking app, and pay close attention to the ribbons tied on the branches. Besides, often you’ll have to push away the bushes and branches that are sticking out on the path, watch high and low to prevent stepping into the holes and knocking your head onto the branches. Some scratches on your arms and legs are however inevitable.

Wong Chuk Kok Tsui 黃竹角咀 Sign at Tai Leng

When you see the Wong Chuk Kok Tsui 黃竹角咀 sign, you are almost reaching the descending part to the coast, before getting to Devil’s Fist. According to the sign, the rock terrace was built in 1668.

Descent from Tai Leng to the coast before you’ll reach Devil’s Fist!

There are ropes for you to hold on to help your descent, but still, watch out for slippery rocks.

Once you get to the coast, walk around it over the rocks and find that fist of the devil. The rocks on the coast are very beautiful, they are mainly in red and golden colors. The whole place is extremely picturesque!

Check the tide forecast before going to Devil’s Fist!

One important thing you should know before going to Devil’s Fist, that is to check the tide forecast , the place can only be reached by foot during low tide, and to be able to see the whole fist for better pictures, the tide level must be at around 0.8M or lower. Otherwise, the bottom of the Devil’s Fist will be immersed in the water.

Coasteering!

Now, you can experience “Coasteering” after seeing Devil’s Fist, go slightly further hiking along the rocky coast for seeing more rock formations and then return to Devil’s Fist. This is the part that you have to find your own path and footing, some parts you have to climb over big rocks, and at parts when climbing is not possible or too high, you’ll have to walk in the water. Be prepared to get wet if you are attempting coastal trekking. If you are just a beginner and do not have many hiking experiences, I don’t suggest you to do it because it can be dangerous.

Remember, there are 19 kms away to Tai Mei Tuk 大美督 from Devil’s Fist. So, if it is getting late, you better be hurry and start hiking back.

Follow exactly the same path you came from Fung Wong Tau 鳳凰頭, it’s just now you hike all the way back there from Devil’s Fist, to Tai Leng 大嶺, to Ngong Chong Shan 昂莊山, to Pak Kok Shan 白角山, and so on.

Once you’ve arrived at Fung Wong Tau, you’ll start to take your left path whenever it comes to a junction. You’ll then get to Plover Cove Reservoir Country Trail, that’s where you are heading to Tai Mei Tuk, around the reservoir.

From that point, you’ll have 5 mountains to hike before you get to the dam, they are Ngor Kai Teng 鵝髻頂, Fu Tau Sha 虎頭沙, Sam Mun Shan 三門山, Pui Shue Wan Shan 砵樹環山 and Cheung Pai Tun 長牌墩, being the last one. The sun will probably set while you are in Plover Cove Reservoir Trail, get your headlamp ready, soon you will be hiking in the dark. Do not worry, because once you get to this trail, it is basically very straight forward and the path gets so much better to hike, with the openness.

The captivating Yan Chau Tong Marine Park!

After the ultra long hike, you must be starving and thirst for some cold drinks, at Tai Mei Tuk, there are plenty of restaurants and stores along the main road. You’ll get to sit down and eat right after you complete the hike, that’s exactly what I did. Reward yourself with good food and drinks after your great achievement. You totally deserve it!

Summary of TIPS before attempting Devil’s Fist trail:
1. Be physically and mentally ready for the 33 kms hike.

2. Check the tide forecast, know the low tide time and calculate your starting time.

3. Bring at least 2-3 liters of water and your lunch/ snacks.

4. Bring a headlamp (you’ll be hiking in the dark towards the end of the trail).

5. Bring gloves and wear long hiking tights to prevent scratches on your arms and legs.

6. Study the trail before the hike.

7. Keep tracing your location on your hiking app so you don’t get lost.

8. Do not forget to do stretching and warm up before you start.

9. Last but not least, enjoy the beautiful nature!
